15 States in 15 Days (Ch 1)

April 30th, 2020

Tomorrow we leave for a a journey across the heart land. Some may say the timing is strange, even dangerous, due to the COVID. It may or may not be true as the data is here, there and everywhere depending on where you’re looking. But this decision, made 2, yes 2, days ago over breakfast feels right. Not solid but right.

It feels right, not because I think I can mitigate risk or know better, but because time is precious. I’ve never had 2 months of stopped life to be with my children and probably never will again. I want this time, that not only has us dealing with the virus but also coincides with us transitioning to a new home/state and business, to be remembered by my kids as the craziest, most adventurous season of their life! A season that stories are written about.

I was riding in the car with Selah and Landon yesterday and the kids said something about how crazy and fun our life is. I responded that each of our lives are like books to be read and said that I often ask myself if anyone would care to read my story? Selah responded, “Yes Papa! I think about that a lot. I think that I’m writing a story while I’m doing things.” Yes you are my dear. Without going into the weeds of the deeper why, I said, “You have a papa that doesn’t make safe decisions. Even before you, life was full of twists, turns, triumphs and failures but they all are part of the greater story that is being written and I’m proud of that story.” Her little face beamed in the back seat and reaffirmed why we’re taking this trip.

We don’t know where we’ll be staying most nights; could be camp ground or hotel/motel. We don’t know who we’ll meet or what we’ll see. Most things could be closed or maybe open. But it doesn’t matter. That’s part of the adventure, part of the story. We’ll be writing it together as a family and that’s all that matters.

My business is coffee. My calling is people.
